What Is Satellite Imagery 3D Reconstruction?
Overview
Satellite Imagery 3D Reconstruction uses stereo and multi-view satellite imagery to generate 3D surface models of the Earth’s terrain and built environment. This approach extends the reach of 3D reconstruction to areas where airborne acquisition is impractical — covering entire regions, cross-border zones, and hard-to-access territories.
How It Works
Satellite 3D reconstruction relies on:
- Stereo/Multi-View Imagery: Overlapping images captured from different orbital positions
- RPC (Rational Polynomial Coefficient) Modeling: Mathematical camera models that relate image coordinates to ground coordinates
- Dense Matching: Pixel-level correspondence between stereo pairs to generate elevation data
- DSM/DTM Generation: Digital Surface Models and Digital Terrain Models as primary outputs
When to Use Satellite 3D
| Scenario | Why Satellite |
|---|---|
| Large-area coverage (50+ km²) | Cost-effective compared to aerial alternatives |
| Restricted access areas | No ground or airspace permits needed |
| Cross-border projects | Orbital data transcends political boundaries |
| Historical analysis | Archive data going back years or decades |
| Frequent monitoring | Regular revisit cycles enable change detection |
| Budget-constrained projects | Lower cost per km² for large areas |
Limitations
- Resolution: Typically 0.3–1.0 m GSD (vs. 1–10 cm for drones)
- Cloud cover dependency: Optical satellites cannot see through clouds
- Urban canyon performance: Limited by nadir/near-nadir viewing angles
- Vertical accuracy: Generally 0.5–3.0 m without ground control
